This week, Instagram users may have noticed a 'Privacy Policy & Terms of Service' notice when you went to refresh your newest likes. If you were like me, you just simply acknowledged it was there, realized you didn't actually have to check any sort of box to update anything, and moved on. But for those of you that did read it, or at least the media uproaring it caused, I can assume you were not happy. Tweets, facebook status', blog posts, all stating that as of January 16th, Instagram would now have the right to sell your photos without your consent. So how do you proceed?

Many people, like National Geographic went as far as to suspend their account immediately. Last April, Facebook purchased the photo sharing site for one billion dollars. Yesterday they replied, assuring you that your photos would not in fact be sold without compensation or your consent. But now that the idea has been put out there, will they actually lose users? Have the semantics of their terms of service agreement created new opportunities for other apps?

Knowing your limits

Every Friday we feature an 'Out of Industry' post. Something that is relevant to media, but not necessarily related to pharma. Today we discuss 'social limitations'. Social media helps you express, connect, and discover new ideas from all over the world, but because there are so many ways to share your idea, it's important to make sure you don't blend in with the crowd. Applications like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram allow you to upload pictures, posts, and tweets as many times a day as you want. But does this hurt or help you in the long run? Too much of the same thing can get lost in the digital world, so what is the best way to monitor your interaction with your audience?

This week apple launched a new app, PicIT24. It's allows users to post pictures and messages, much like twitter and instagram, but this application only allows one post per day. PicIT24 also lets users sort friends by group to further cut through the noise, but functions as its own social network replete with photo filters of its own. While that may not stop your over-tweeting or all-too-frequent Insta-posts, it can still teach an important lesson amid the increasing ubiquitousness of social media: sometimes less still is more

About the Session: According to recent statistics, 75% of adults taking medication are non-adherent in one or more ways and the economic impact of non-adherence is estimated to cost $100 billion annually (PhRMA, 2011). Adherence among children is even lower since they are dependent on an adult remembering to administer the medication. One way to potentially increase adherence for children is through gamification, so they are incentivized to seek out medication from their caregivers. With games for children on iPads and cell phones becoming more ubiquitous, gamification via mhealth technologies promises to be even more efficient for increasing adherence for children.
